Russia: Putin wishes Russians a happy New Year
Russian President Vladimir Putin gave a speech at the annual festive reception for the holiday season in the Kremlin in Moscow on Friday evening.
"From the bottom of my heart, I would like to extend you my New Year greetings and wishes of love, happiness, good health and prosperity," said the president. "I would also like to propose a toast. Here is to peace and friendship all over Russia! May we be successful in all our endeavors. To Russia! Happy New Year."
The New Year holiday is widely celebrated in Russia, since the Orthodox Church's use of the Julian calendar puts Christmas after the turn of the year.
