India: Rashtriya Rifles special forces kill Kashmir militant
A militant belonging to Pakistan-based Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) militant group was killed during a gun battle with a joint team of special forces troops from the Rashtriya Rifles regiment and police special forces in the Budgam area of Indian-administered Kashmir on Thursday.
Militants opened fire on troops from the 53rd battalion of the Rashtriya Rifles, backed up by troops from the police Special Operations Group, who returned fire with assault rifles and incendiary grenades. After the house was reduced to rubble, the troops retrieved the body of a man, reported to be Omar Bilal, wanted for the killing of a police commander in Chadoora.
Another suspect is believed to have escaped despite a police cordon around Kashmir's capital city, Srinagar. An AK-47 assault rifle and some ammunition were recovered from the debris, a police spokesman said. A high-security alert was called throughout the city while makeshift checkpoints carried out systematic searches of people and vehicles.
