Russia: Arctic 30 wing their way home after amnesty

Greenpeace activists picked up their passports on Wedesday Christmas day in Moscow as news of their pardon filled their hearts with joy. Russia dropped all charges against the 30 activists who were detained in September over a protest staged at a Gazprom oil rig. The activists should be able to go home within days, once they receive exit visas.

The amnesty was proposed by President Vladimir Putin in early December to mark the 20th anniversary of the Russian Constitution. The so-called Arctic 30, charged initially with piracy but later with hooliganism, were released on bail in November after being behind bars for over two months for protesting oil drilling in the environmentally sensitive Arctic region.

Brazilian activist Ana Paula Maciel spoke to the press before walking away, saying: ""Half of my heart is still arrested in Murmansk like we don't have our ship back. The other half it is in the Arctic because 'Gazprom' just started to suck oil from there. So, its not over."
