Russia: Izhevsk mourns for hometown hero Kalashnikov

Mourners laid flowers at the statue of famous firearms designer Mikhail Kalashnikov in Izhevsk on Tuesday, after the 94-year-old passed away from complications related to a heart condition.

The peasant soldier turned tank mechanic conceived of his signature invention, the AK-47, while recovering from a shoulder wound in hospital, having been injured fighting on the Eastern Front in the Second World War.

The rifle was and still is a hugely successful model, inextricably linked forever to their creator by their name, Avtomat Kalashnikova.
