Germany: Khodorkovsky thanks Merkel during Berlin press conference
Mikhail Khodorkovsky is holding a press conference at the Berlin Wall Museum, near Checkpoint Charlie, from 1 pm CET on Sunday. During the conference, he expressed his thanks to the German Chancellor Angela Merkel for her role in securing his release.
Mikhail Khodorkovsky, 50, was released from prison on Friday after spending a decade behind bars for fraud, embezzlement and tax evasion.
Khodorkovsky's mother is seriously ill, and has been receiving cancer treatment in Berlin. Her ill health is said to be the reason behind President Vladimir Putin's decision to sign a Thursday decree granting Khodorkovsky's release. Putin himself cited "humanitarian principles" for his decision.
