India: US embassy barriers removed in retaliatory act
Police forces removed concrete security barriers from outside the American Embassy in Delhi Tuesday, in retaliation for the treatment of the India's Deputy Consul General Devyani Khobragade in New York. The barriers have protected US embassies across the world since 9/11.
Cranes removed the barriers around the embassy and police opened the Nyaya Marg for general traffic, following a government announcement to strip US diplomats and their families of certain privileges. Among the revoked privileges are airport access passes and import duty exemptions.
Khobragade was arrested and handcuffed in New York last week on charges of visa fraud. Recent revelations have also shed light on the fact that a strip search was conducted.
