      Germany: Von der Leyen's seven children attend mother's defence minister appointment

      The seven children of the newly appointed German defence minister Ursula von der Leyen attended their mother's defence minister appointment ceremony on Tuesday. She is the first female to hold the role in German history.

      Billed as a likely successor to Angela Merkel after she steps down after this term, von der Leyen is a rising figure with the Christian Democrats (CDU). She is known as an advocate of Europe, believing a federalised united states of Europe is the best route for the future.
