USA: North Korean execution reports 'dramatic and surprising' - Ban Ki-Moon
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Monday in New York commented that reports that North Korea's number two leader Jang Song-thaek was executed under orders from Kim Jong Un are "dramatic and surprising". He added that at the same time the international community should be careful to avoid any premature actions on the Korean Peninsula,
He said: "When it comes to this execution, our spokesperson has already announced that when it comes to [the] death penalty, the United Nations has taken a very clear position that under any circumstances [the] United Nations is opposed to the imposition of [the] death penalty. This is a very fundamental human rights issue."
North Korean state media announced December 13 that Jang was executed for crimes including 'thrice-cursed acts of treachery in betrayal of such profound trust and warmest paternal love shown by the party and the leader for him.' Jang, an uncle of leader Kim Jong Un, was seen by many observers as the second most powerful person in the country.
