USA: 'You cannot be an arsonist and a fireman at the same time' - Jaafari
The United States must be fully committed to achieving peace in Syria if upcoming Geneva II talks are to be successful, Syria's permanent representative to the United Nations Bashar Jaafari said Monday at the UN in New York.
He said: "You cannot be an arsonist and a fireman at the same time. [The] USA is a full partner with the Russian Federation in preparing the ground for Geneva II talks. Either you prepare the ground, you know, appropriately for going to [the] Geneva talks on solid ground, or you disassociate yourself from this issue and say, 'You know guys, I cannot be responsible for solving the Syrian crisis peacefully and I am going to help the terrorists.' You cannot do both. We need the US to be involved, deeply involved, positively involved in preparing the ground for real peace talks in Geneva II."
Peace talks between the Syrian government and opposition groups, known as Geneva II, are slated to take place January 22, 2014 in Geneva, Switzerland.
