USA: Californians trade in guns for vouchers
Los Angeles hosted its first gun buyback initiative since Mayor Eric Garcetti took office, Saturday. The programme is aimed at encouraging gun owners to surrender their weapons with anonymity. The aim: to reduce the number of privately held firearms and limit gun crime.
Those who give up handguns, shotguns, and rifles are entitled to a $100 (€73) store gift card, with those who surrender assault weapons given a $200 (€146) gift card.
Once surrendered, firearms become the property of the Los Angeles Police Department. Firearms are checked for lost and stolen status, and organisers say they will return such weapons to their rightful owners. The remainder of the surrendered guns are destroyed by the LAPD.
The LA programme is part of a statewide scheme, with weapon hand-in locations set up across northern and southern California. Over the past five to six years, the gun buyback scheme has taken approximately 11,000 guns off the streets.
