Russia: Sochi Olympic mascots get ceramic makeover
Hand painted ceramic figurines of the Sochi Olympic Games mascots were being crafted in the village of Gzhel near Moscow on Thursday. The village is renowned for the style of blue and white ceramics and has produced the pottery for more than 200 years.
Production of traditional Russian folk crafts has picked up ahead of the 2014 Winter Olympics, and the three Olympic mascots, a hare, a snow leopard and a polar bear have been given their Gzhel makeover.
The Gzhel Porcelain Factory is Russia's largest maker of traditional pottery with hand painted cobalt designs. Founded in 1818, the factory has 40 craftspeople working on Olympics themed products.
The licenced merchandise has gone on sale across Russia at designated Olympic sections in sportswear stores, and are also available online.
