Ukraine: Batons out as riot police clash with occupiers
Ranks of riot police clashed with protesters on Kiev's Luteranskaya street on Tuesday morning during a police operation involving hundreds of officers coordinating to push out protest camps at key locations including Independence Square and Mariinksy Park. Early reports from journalists on the scene spoke of around 15 people injured during the confrontation.
Activists attempted to resist at several places across the city, leading to running battles with police, who used baton charges and riot shields as they pushed through lines of protesters.
Earlier in the day, police surrounded several of the camps, removing some of the temporary barricades and debris with which the demonstrators had fortified their positions.
