USA: Mourners lay flowers at Mandela statue in DC
Mourners of the late Nelson Mandela visited his statue at the South African embassy in Washington DC on Friday. They lay flowers at the foot of the statue and some had their picture taken next to it. Entrance to the statue was originally blocked off due to construction work. However, it was opened again following the death of the iconic anti-apartheid leader.
The three-metre tall Mandela statue was unveiled in September this year. With the South African embassy forming an important rallying point for anti-apartheid protesters throughout the 1980s, it is an historically important location for the anti-apartheid movement in the United States.
