France: Lyon's light festival goes eco
The Festival of Lights began in Lyon on Friday, with spectators being treated to a dazzling array of performances and displays using the medium of light. To encourage the participating light artists to save power, only LED lights are being used, and the installation that uses the least energy is awarded a prize. The power bill for the whole festival is only €5,000 ($6,800) according to organisers.
Two million spectators are expected to visit the festival over the weekend, making it the third biggest festival in the world in terms of attendance after the Rio de Janeiro carnival and the Munich Oktoberfest.
The Festival of Lights pays tribute to the Virgin Mary and was first celebrated following the erection of a stature of her in 1852. The festival ends on Monday.
