UK: Mandela film premiere overshadowed by news of his death
Attendees at the premiere of the new film of Nelson Mandela's life, 'Long Walk to Freedom', were stunned by the news of the anti-apartheid leader's death on Thursday night, among them Mandela's daughter Zindzi.
Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge were among the dignitaries who joined the cast for the event, which marked the solemn occasion with a moment of silence after a montage of photos of the revolutionary icon played over the film's credits.
British actor Idris Elba, who plays Mandela in the film, released a statement after hearing of the 95-year-old former president's passing, speaking of the honour of stepping into the great man's shoes, and expressing his 'mourning with the rest of the world and Madiba's family'. Tributes also flooded in from world leaders including US president Barack Obama and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
