Russia: Militants fired upon during FSB firefight

Russian forces were fired upon Thursday by militants with automatic weapons in the Khasavyurt Region four kilometres (2.5 miles) north of the village of Novyy Kostek. In the ensuing firefight, FSB (Federal Security Service) and Russian Interior Ministry police officers managed to neutralise five militants. There were no civilian casualties or losses among law enforcement in the firefight.

According to operational headquarters data, the militants were active members of the "Khasavyurt" gang, had previously attacked law enforcement and engaged in extortion of large sums of money. Four rifles, machine guns and ammunition were found on-site.

While the active phase of the operation is completed, further investigative actions and operational searches will be implemented.
