Argentina: Police strike leads to mass looting
While police were on strike Tuesday, mass looting and vandalism by gangs of youths took place in Cordoba, which injured at least 130 people and killed one.
A young man around 20-years-old died from gunshot wounds to his chest, while more than 50 people who took part in the looting have been detained. 12 of the 130 wounded sustained their injuries from firearms.
As news of the strike broke Tuesday, looters quickly appeared in the streets, targeting supermarkets and small stores. Targets included clothing shops, sporting goods retailers, toy stores, bike shops, and branches of cell phone companies. Bus services and other public transport stopped operating Wednesday, with officials citing an increased chance of crime and passengers being mugged.
