Ukraine: Donetsk voices opposition to pro-EU rallies
Several thousand protesters in the Ukrainian city of Donetsk rallied to voice their opposition to pro-European Union demonstrations in Kiev and elsewhere in the country, in a region known for its strong support of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych. Organisers said 15,000 people gathered, while local media reported about 5,000 participants.
Protesters waved Ukrainian flags and banners of the pro-presidential Party of Regions. The Party of Regions is among the largest political parties in the country and is headed by Prime Minister Mykola Azarov.
Viktor Yanukovych was born in Yenakiieve, which is located in the Donetsk region.
