Russia: Red square gets Russia's largest ice rink
The largest skating rink in Russia has been erected in Moscow's Red Square, bringing hundreds into a festive mood, Sunday. As many gathered around the rink, professional skaters performed pirouettes and jumps to the sound of a live orchestra.
The skating rink has the capacity for more than 500 people at a time, with a surface of 2,700 square metres. The rink has been made available for a range of sports, including ice hockey. A little town has been built around the ice field for skaters to find a place to rest after practising sport.
A Christmas fair also opened on Sunday near the Kremlin's walls, in which traditional Russian souvenirs and winter Russian treats such as pancakes with caviar can be bought.
