Thailand: Bangkok in turmoil, water cannons and tear gas fired

Bangkok police fought with protesters who targeted key sites in the Thai capital Sunday, as they attempted to wrest power from the government of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra. The government has urged everyone in the capital to stay indoors.

Gunfire reverberated around the city as protesters stormed key locations, including TV stations from where activists are attempting to broadcast their leader's call for a general strike Monday. Four people are reported to have died in fighting.

Riot police have been deployed in an attempt to break-up the demonstrations, with Thailand's armed forces preparing to deploy thousands of soldiers to secure the streets. The prime minister's office and the police headquarters were defended with tear gas and water cannons.

Protests have been ongoing since a government attempt to pass an amnesty law sparked clashes between rival groups. Activists say the law was a thinly veiled ploy to allow the return of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who is currently in self-imposed exile following a conviction for corruption. He is the older brother of Yingluck Shinawatra.
