Spain: Hey, Rajoy! Authorise this
Hundreds of demonstrators marched to the ruling party Partido Popular headquarters in the Spanish capital on Friday, to protest against the new law to be implemented by the President Mariano Rajoy's government that restricts demonstration rights.
The law, named Civic Security Law, was approved in Congress on Friday. The bill includes some controversial aspects that social groups such as 'Afectados por la Hipoteca' consider to be anti-democratic, accusing the government of curtailing protesters' rights. The Ministry of Interior dropped the proposed sanction against demonstrations in front of the congress, senate and the legislative assemblies after much criticism. However, protesters now face a fine up to €600,000 ($815,000) for "disturbances of civic security" for engaging in such demonstrations.
The law includes economic sanctions of up to €30,000 ($41,000) for offences against Spain or any of its regions. Also, the holding of meetings in public places can lead to fines of €600,000 ($815,000) for gathering, protesting or participating in non-authorised demonstrations.
