Russia: Putin visits Fisht Olympic Stadium ahead of Sochi 2014

Russian President Vladimir Putin paid a visit to Sochi's Fisht Olympic Stadium on Friday, where the opened ceremony for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games opening ceremony will be held.

President Putin was shown around by the Director General of Russian Federal Channel One, Konstantin Ernst. Ernst will be responsible for the TV transmission of the ceremony, and showed President Putin the place from which he will view the opening ceremony.

Ernst reportedly says the stadium will be able to house Formula 1 starts and large-scale performances such as Cirque du Soleil shows. Ernst also drew the president's attention to the specially designed roof, equipped with 81 special carriages and 20 lifts allowing heavy loads to be transported at any height within the stadium.

The Fisht Olympic Stadium, named after Mount Fisht, costs $603.5 million and is able to accommodate for 40,000 spectators. After the Sochi Olympic Games, the stadium complex will serve as a training centre and match venue for the Russian National Football Team. The Fisht stadium is one of the 11 arenas chosen to host matches at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
