      Hundreds of shoppers in New York queued at the entrances of major department stores on Black Friday hoping to get a deal.

      Black Friday is the Friday following Thanksgiving, and is traditionally regarded as the start of the shopping season as hundreds of items get massively discounted.

      The name of the day first originated in Philadelphia, where it was used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic, which would typically occur the day after Thanksgiving.
