Honduras: Ex-president Zelaya says elections should be annulled

Although a winner of the Honduran presidential elections has not yet been declared, candidate Xiomara Castro's husband and deposed president Manuel Zelaya on Sunday called for the eventual result to be annulled, citing inconsistencies.

The Electoral Supreme Tribunal (TSE) of Honduras has already announced that candidate Juan Orlando Hernanadez is in a strong lead with 34.15 percent of the vote while Castro is at 28.45 percent.

Referring to a contested vote-count, Zelaya told the press in Tegucigalpa, "Well the 20 percent equals to 1,800 actions. Multiply yourself 250 votes for each action. For the 1,800, they are not giving almost 400,000 votes which have become unaccounted for. [*speaking to a journalist*] It appears to me that this is incorrect, Raul, to whichever analyst. Even the most minor analysis does not resist, statistically, what the Tribunal [TSE] is doing with those actions. The magistrates of the tribunal have just recognized this. The 19 percent, to be exact, of the actions were not passed to publication because they have inconsistencies. So then, the elections are annulled."

Additionally, he rejected any indication of Castro's defeat, "We do not accept that result, we protest against that result, we reject that result, because on our statistics, on our accounts that we took, in our balance, in our council, in everything that we did mathematically, Xiomara wins the Presidency of the Republic."

Rival presidential candidates Hernandez and Castro are both celebrating victory in the Honduras presidential election as the vote count goes down to the wire.
