Vatican City: 'Bones of St. Peter' go on public display for first time in history
Pope Francis put what is believed to be the bones of St. Peter on public display at St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican on Sunday, making him the first pontiff to have ever done so.
Coinciding with the last day of the Year of Faith, a time when Catholics around the world have been asked to deepen their understanding of a particular aspect in their belief in God, Pope Francis along with priests presented the 'remains to St. Peter' at a mass in St. Peter's Square.
St. Peter was one of Jesus' apostles, and is considered to be the first bishop and pope of the Christian church. While there can be no formal DNA identification of the bones, Catholics queued for hours to get a glimpse of the remains they view as sacred.
