Russia: Let's get ready to Sambo as World Championships begin
Vladimir Putin participated in the opening ceremony for the 37th World Sambo Championships in Saint Petersburg on Friday, and presented awards to the winners of the first day’s competitions.
The Russian sport, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary, was originally developed by the Soviet Red Army in order to improve hand-to-hand combat abilities.
The 37th World SAMBO Championship takes place from 22-24 November, and will see more than 600 wrestlers from around the world compete for medals in the Jubileyny 'sports palace' in Saint Petersburg.
Vladimir Putin said: “I am very pleased that this sport, which was born in our nation, is developing actively and rapidly.”
