Indonesia: Rage at Australian embassy over spying allegations
Over 400 Indonesians furious at alleged monitoring of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's phone conversations by the Australian government vented their rage in front of the Australian embassy in Jakarta on Friday, hurling objects and burning a flag and images of Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott. Among the protesters were several people in the distinctive red camouflage uniforms of the Pancasila Youth paramilitary organisation.
Indonesia has recalled its ambassador, announced it "downgraded" relations with Australia and suspended cooperation on people-smuggling following outrage over reported phone-tapping of President Susilo, his wife and eight Indonesian ministers and officials in 2009.
In addition to hurling bottles, tomatoes and eggs, protesters also called for the Australian ambassador to be expelled. About 500 police officers were deployed to protect the embassy, according to South Jakarta Police Chief Col. Wahyu Hadiningrat. The embassy has been closed since Thursday.
