Italy: Storm not seen 'for centuries' shatters Sardinia
Sardinia was ravaged by flooding on Tuesday after a torrential rainstorm killed over a dozen people, downed bridges and swept away cars on the Mediterranean island. Extreme weather caused by Cyclone Cleopatra has affected at least 200,000 people, with Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta saying a storm of such intensity had not hit Sardinia "for centuries".
Over 440 millimetres (17.3 inches) of rain has fallen in the past 24 hours on the island, almost half the average amount that falls on Italy over an entire year. According to Sardinia's regional governor, Ugo Cappellacci, in addition to the 17 known victims, several more people remain missing.
