Poland: Greenpeace protest 'slap in the face' climate summit

Greenpeace activists from over 20 countries stormed the roof of the Ministry of Economy in Warsaw on Monday morning, unveiling a huge banner declaring: 'Who rules Poland? Coal industry or the people?' in a bid to turn attention to the importance of climate change.

The protesters are infuriated by the two-day World Coal Summit, hosted by the Polish deputy prime minister and beginning in the Polish capital on Monday, saying the world's largest coal companies, senior policy-makers and business leaders attending the event will not solve climate change but instead add to global pollution.

Meri Pukarinen, a Greenpeace activist, says: "The coal and climate summit coinciding with the climate negotiations is a slap in the face for those people who are already feeling the impact of climate change, like the Philippines. There can be no new investments in coal, they must be renewables."

Currently representatives of 194 nations are gathered in Warsaw to find ways to address climate change at the UN Climate talks, but Greenpeace activists are angry at Poland's "coal addiction."

In 2012 Poland was the world's ninth-biggest coal producer.
