France: Liberation newspaper Paris HQ targeted by gunman
A gunman in Paris opened fire at the headquarters of left-leaning newspaper Liberation on Monday, seriously wounding a photographer. The gunman fled the scene and is still at large. The photographer, wounded on the thorax, is fighting for his life, according to police officials. Fabrice Rousselot, the editorial manager, has told police that the gunman entered the office, fired twice and left. The motive of the attack is still unclear.
Police have set up a security perimeter around the newspaper office in Paris's 3rd arrondissement area. After the morning chase, reports say the gunman took a hostage and forced him to drive to the Champs-Elysees in Paris around 13:00 local time (12:00 GMT), then freed the hostage.
Prime Minister Jean Marc Ayrault has publicly called the shooting an attack against "one of the pillars of democracy - freedom of the press".
Last Friday an armed man entered the headquarters of media outlet BFM TV and threatened one of the senior editors, firing two blanks with a shotgun. Police are now investigating if the two incidents are related.
