Russia: Brazilian Greenpeace activist release petition denied
Brazilian 'Arctic 30' Greenpeace activist Ana Paula Alminhana Maciel filed a petition to be released from prison during the hearing on Monday in St. Petersburg, but the court denied it. Her lawyer also introduced a letter of support from the Advisor to the President of the Russian Federation for Human Rights, but the court dismissed the petition because it was not addressed to the court.
Investigators initially charged all the 'Arctic 30' with piracy, but later changed the charges to hooliganism, with a maximum sentence of seven years in jail, if the accused are found guilty.
