Greece: Protest anger aimed at US on Polytechnic uprising anniversary
More than eight thousand people took to the streets of Athens on Sunday for the annual commemoration of the Athens Polytechnic School uprising in 1973 against the military government. Left wing parties have called a march through the city centre to the US embassy.
The protests have a history of erupting into clashes, with this year more than 6,000 police forces deployed around the city. Riot units held tight security around the US embassy - a common target for protest violence each year.
This year, students from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) invited former ERT employees to hold a public radio broadcast from their campus, a move which Greek police have warned they may shut down.
