USA: Cyber-activist who hacked Stratfor given maximum sentence

The cyber-activist and hacker Jeremy Hammond was given the maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison in New York, Friday. Hammond hacked the private intelligence company

Stratfor and released a trove of highly sensitive emails, as well as accessing and using the credit card data of Stratfor subscribers. The company has been colloquially dubbed by some supporters of Hammond, including some of the 100 or so demonstrators outside the court, as "the shadow CIA."

The court's decision puts Hammond under supervised controls for three years upon his release, banning him from encryption technologies and any attempts to anonymise his identity.

Hammond pleaded guilty to the charges relating to the hack conducted in December 2011, when he was an activist in the 'Anonymous' group. He maintains that the credit card data stolen during the hack was strictly for charity donations, which reportedly totalled over $1 million (€740,000). The hack revealed a deep interconnection between Stratfor and government agencies: with emails indicating possible insider trading, support for intelligence services and strong relations with political figures like Benjamin Netanyahu. The server Hammond used to store the stolen data, run by Hector Monsegur, allowed for a sting operation as Monsegur was at the time an informant for the FBI.
