Russia: Putin awards paratroopers with Suvorov combat medal

Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the Ryazan Higher Airborne Command School in the Russian city of Ryazan Friday, presenting the Medal of Suvorov to the school. The Medal is awarded to troops for courage in combat.

Speaking to the academy, Putin said: "Comrade officers, students, sergeants, soldiers, and veterans, I congratulate you on the Academy's 95th anniversary and on the presentation of the Suvorov Medal. Military academies have always been a sacred concept for every Russian officer. It is here that people learn to become military professionals, uphold their uniform's honour, and remain loyal to their oath and to the unwritten laws of military comradeship."

Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and Airborne Forces Commander Vladimir Shamanov also took part in the ceremony. Before presenting the medal, Putin saw the Hero's Star monument and Avenue of Heroes memorial complex, also laying flowers at the monument to Army General Vasily Margelov and a wreath at the monument to academy graduates killed in action.
