Equatorial Guinea: Spanish football team ruffles feathers playing in Mbasongo's backyard
World number one-ranked football squad of Spain arrived in the African nation of Equatorial Guinea on Friday, while human rights groups protested their upcoming match against the former Spanish colony, due to what they say is a record of human rights abuses and a dictatorial government.
'La Furia Roja ' will face the 119th-ranked Equatorial Guinea national team in a match in the capital Malabo on Saturday. Spain will become the first nation from outside Africa to play in Malabo since President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo took power in 1979. Equatorial Guinea is coached by former Spain international Andoni Goikoetxea.
The Spanish Association for Human Rights (APDHE) expressed its "outright rejection" of the match in a letter to Spain's football federation president, Angel Maria Villa Llona. The group cited the fact the 71-year-old Obiang is Africa's longest-serving head of state as a reason to cancel the match.
