Germany: Wheelchair users play it by ear
German scientists have revealed a revolutionary device which will allow wheelchairs to be controlled by the user's ears, at the Medical University in Goettingen on Thursday. Users are fitted with chips capable of picking up muscle movements in the ears, and then transmitting them to a computer fitted to the wheelchair. The person which is wearing the device is still able to talk, drink and eat freely.
Professor Dr David Liebetanz presented the groundbreaking invention, which was developed over the course of a year by researchers from Karlsruhe, Heidelberg and Goettingen. The device was tested by ten study participants, who learned how to operate the device with their ears after just five days. The project is being encouraged by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
