Pilgrims bearing torches and knives streamed to the Sayyidah Zaynab mosque in southern Damascus on in the early hours of Thursday for Ashura, the holiest day of the year for Shia Muslims. The celebrations comes amid heavy fighting in the suburbs around the Syrian capital.
Ashura commemorates the martyrdom of Hussein ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib, who was killed in Iraq in 680. His death was one of the main events which resulted in the current schism between Shia and Sunni Muslims.
