India: Russo-China nuclear policy now backed by P5+1 - Lavrov
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said "significant progress" had been made at the P5+1 international meeting in Geneva, and that the nuclear weapon control policy Russia and China have been advocating is now supported by all members of the Sextet. Lavrov made the remarks at the 12th trilateral meeting between the foreign ministers of India, China and Russia in New Delhi on Sunday.
Lavrov said "Russia as well as other members of the 3+3 Group [P5+1] and the international community in general, seeks to eliminate the risk of nuclear proliferation, and this can only be done through negotiations. So we are very pleased that the policy Russia and China have been advocating for years is now supported by all the Sextet members. The essence of this policy is that we should lay threats and sanctions aside, bypassing the UN Security Council, and address the problem effectively."
He added "this is exactly what happened. I want to highlight once again that the US delegation headed by Secretary of State John Kerry had played a very important role in this process. They had been a looking for the kind of agreements that would help find common approaches between all the parties and Iran. All the participants of yesterday's meeting agreed that we made a significant progress. I confirmed this assessment as well, and I shared the details with my colleagues and friends at today's meeting of foreign ministers of Russia, India and China. On November 20 the Sextet political directors are going to meet to formulate the approaches based on the developments of the Geneva discussions, which may become the foundation for the joint document, and it's a very good chance for this to come through."
The Russian foreign had been in Geneva earlier in the weekend where he attended the P5+1 negotiations alongside the Iranian delegation.
