France: Jean Marie Le Pen under fire from Paris protesters
Hundreds of left-wing activists from the New Anticapitalist Party, the Left Party and trade unions including the CGT and PCF federations gathered in front of the town hall of Champigny-sur-Marne in the suburbs of Paris on Thursday to protest the arrival of Jean Marie Le Pen.
Le Pen, a 75-year-old politician and the founder of the far-right Front National (FN) party, was due to give a press conference to help launch his party's campaign for upcoming European Parliamentary elections. The conference went ahead with increased security, with the crowd of supporters singing the French national anthem.
Le Pen is the founder and honorary chairman of the FN, which is currently led by his daughter Marine. He has been a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) six times, the first being in 1984 and the most recent in 2009.
