USA: Washington will not label GMO food

Anti-genetic modification campaigners at a rally in Seattle were disappointed after Washington state voted against the initiative that would have obliged food producers to label products containing genetically engineered ingredients on Tuesday.

The campaign around the initiative brought up around 22 million US dollars in fundraising. Reportedly the top five contributors were the Grocery Manufacturers Association, Monsanto, DuPont Pioneer, Dow AgroSciences and Bayer CropScience, who claimed in adverts that food prices would rise if the initiative were to be accepted.

Washington state was the largest administrative body in the United States to consider a GMO labelling policy.
