Ukraine: EU flag on fire in Crimea

An estimated 500-800 people from the Cossack community and various pro-Russian organisations marched in the Ukrainian city of Simferopol in the Crimea peninsula on Monday. The march coincided with the Russian Day of National Unity, and protesters burned an EU flag, rallying for joining the Russian Customs Union.

The Ukrainian government plans to sign the European Union trade agreement in early November, while Russia insists that the Ukraine become a member of the Customs Union which currently includes Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan.

Earlier, Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych said that accession to either union should be put to a referendum.
