Egypt: Morsi supporters erupt as trial is adjourned

A Cairo judge adjourned the trial of ousted President Mohammed Morsi shortly after it began Monday, because defendants had disrupted proceedings with their chanting and the deposed president himself showed defiance in court. Morsi insists he is still the lawful president of Egypt, and reportedly told the judge that the "trial is illegitimate." He also refuses to wear prison-issue clothing.

Hundreds of pro-Morsi demonstrators had gathered outside the courthouse, which is protected by barbed wire fences, as well as hundreds of police and members of the Egyptian military (SCAF).

Morsi and 14 others stand accused of inciting murder. During the unrest that saw SCAF oust the president, Morsi rallied his supporters, encouraging them to confront his opposition. In the violence that ensued following the removal of Morsi on July 3, over 100 were injured and at least two had died by the end of July 4.

Subsequently, Egypt has been wrought with division. Over 1,000 have been killed since SCAF came to power under a state of emergency, which is due to last until November 14. Egypt's Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy stated that elections should be held by late spring, following changes to the constitution.
