Space: ISS crew make history as they prep for Olympic torch
ISS crew members relocated their shuttle, Friday, as they prepared for the Olympic torch to come to space. Commander of Expedition 37 Fyodor Yurchikhin led the relocation of the Soyuz TMA-09M spacecraft in a 25-minute manoeuvre.
Usually, when crews shift, a spacecraft departs weeks before another crew is sent to space. However, for the first time ever, the crew of Expedition 36 are staying, moving their spacecraft to accommodate the crew of Expedition 38, coming on the Soyuz TMA-11M, which is due to dock on November 7.
After it arrives, the Olympic torch will be taken for a spacewalk by flight engineers Oleg Katov and Sergei Ryanzanskiy on November 9, before returning to Earth to continue the longest Olympic torch relay of all time. Two Olympic torches already flew on space shuttle missions, for the Atlanta and Sydney games in 1996 and 2000, respectively. However, this is the first time a torch will go on a spacewalk.
