Georgia: Margvelashvili set for victory as election draws to a close

Georgian Dream party candidate, Giorgi Margvelashvili, is said to be in the lead as voting for the nation's presidential election wrapped up on Sunday.

Margvelashvili, an ally of Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili, leads with about 68 per cent of the vote according to Imedi TV's exit polls.

David Bakradze, who is supported by outgoing president Mikhail Saakashvili, is second with 17.1 per cent, and former parliament speaker, Nino Burdzhanadze, is third with 9.3 per cent.

There were a record 23 candidates running for president, with Margvelashvili entering the race as favourite.
