Germany: US monitored Merkel's mobile phone calls - reports

German Chancellor Angela Merkel telephoned United States President Barack Obama Wednesday to ask for clarification after media reports suggested the Americans have been monitoring Merkel's mobile phone usage.

President Obama assured the German leader that the US is not monitoring her communications.

In an official statement Merkel's spokesperson commented that "she unambiguously condemns such practices, if they prove to be true, and considers them completely unacceptable. They would constitute a grave breach of trust. Such practices would have to be stopped immediately."

Privacy is a sensitive issue in Germany and Edward Snowden's NSA leaks alarmed many Germans. Also the reported construction of a brand-new US Army Europe Consolidated Intelligence Center (CIC) near Frankfurt in Weisbanden-Erbenheim added fuel to the fire.

The €124 million ($163 million) facility is meant to be finished by the end of 2015. NSA-oppositionists have been pressuring the German government to be more demanding of answers from the US regarding allegations that the NSA's surveillance program was used to spy on private German citizens.
