Italy: Syrian refugees wait in vain in Milan station

Around 200 Syrian refugees continued their vigil at Milan's central train station in Italy on Monday, while their asylum claims were processed by Italian officials. A number of Syrians completed registration forms with the city hall of Milan, while others waited patiently or slept.

The number of asylum seekers at the station has grown drastically over the past two weeks, with local charities providing assistance in the form of food, hot drinks, shoes, blankets and sleeping bags. On Thursday, the city hall of Milan organised a crisis unit and is also providing emergency assistance.

Under European Union law, asylum seekers have to remain in the first European country they enter while their application for asylum is processed.
