Spain: Police fail to break workers' blockade
Catalan police attempted to break through hundreds of workers who organised a picket of the Panrico bread factory in Santa Perpetua de Mogoda on Monday. Authorities were not able to break up the protest, and strikers succeeded in keeping administrative workers from entering the facilities.
The blockade was organised to protests against the layoff of 1,914 workers, almost half of the company's staff, and the reduction of salaries for those who stay between 35% and 45%. Strikers chanted "Viva the working class fight" and "No one listens to us, rights otherwise fight". The stoppage has caused production to grind to a halt at the site.
The unions rejected the announcement on September 25 and instead committed to an indefinite starting on October 13. Panrico, founded in 1962, is a Spanish food group specialising in the production and distribution of bread and bakery products.
