Mexico: "Siege of books" ends in victory for writers at Zocalo square
Writers Paco Ignacio Taibo II and Fabrizio Mejia led a peaceful protest called "The Siege of Books" on Friday by flooding Zocalo square with over a thousand books in Mexico City. The protest is against the federal police who have occupied the square since removing teachers using tear gas and water cannons the day before Independence Day. The teachers had been protesting for three weeks against education reforms put forward by President Enrique Pena Nieto by camping inside the square.
An international book fair was due to be held in Zocalo on Friday however the ongoing occupation of the square by police has prevented the event from taking place. President Enrique Pena Nieto has said that the two week event will now take place later on October 16 and police have begun to withdraw from Zocalo.
