Italy: Divers find sunken migrant vessel on ocean floor
The Italian fire service released underwater footage on Friday showing the underwater remains of the boat that capsized off the that capsized off the island of Lampedusa in southern Italy on Thursday, capsizing hundreds of migrants into the sea. The footage shows the vessel lying upright on the seabed at a depth of 47 metres.
Italian rescue services have so far recovered 111 bodies from the wreck, but had to postpone the search for around 200 more people as yet unaccounted for on Friday due to bad weather conditions. The vessel was no more than 1km (0.6 miles) from shore when fuel caught fire, causing a blaze that sunk the vessel.
About 500 African migrants, mostly Eritreans and Somalis, were on board. So far 155 people have survived the wreck.
