Germany: Merkel continues search for coalition partners
Members of Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrat Party (CDU) and their Social Democrat (SPD) counterparts held exploratory talks towards the creation of a grand ruling coalition on Friday in Berlin. No immediate agreement was reached, despite both parties making positive statements about the talks.
The General Secretary of the CDU Herman Grohe stressed the talks focused on the common points of their electoral programmes: "There was a good and constructive atmosphere. We have talked about the biggest challenges of our country and Europe, the evolution of the economy, the stability of our currency, the key for a good and engaged situation of all we need for the evolution of our society for future investment."
The General Secretary of the SPD, Andrea Nahles, named other subjects discussed as: "the evolution of the EU, the infrastructure question and the economic position of Germany, as well as subjects like energy transmission, the employment market and, at last but not least, family and education".
The next exploratory talks between 120 representatives of the CDU and SPD will take place on October 14.
